Helicopter traffic control procedures are frequently overlooked in standard aerodrome control training programmes, which concentrate on fixed-wing traffic. There are particular air traffic control problems that arise from helicopter operations. To bridge this knowledge gap, a simulation explicitly designed for helicopter use was developed and tested to enhance the decision-making and situational awareness of air traffic control trainees. Following a rigorous methodology that includes needs analysis, expert validation, scenario planning, and a pilot study, the research and development project was conducted. The views of 24 students were ascertained through questionnaires, observations, and interviews, and experts in the relevant field were consulted to verify that the material applied in practice and in teaching. Based on the results of forensic analyses of the UH-60L Black Hawk and CRJ700 accidents, a realistic simulation was developed. The system enables users to experience realistic helicopter-versus-plane battles that occur when pilots rely solely on visual cues for navigation. The simulation also accounts for aircraft sequencing for landing and the need for pilots to resolve conflicts promptly. The majority of participants (83%) indicated a need for helicopter simulator training, and more than 75% demonstrated improved analytical and communication skills through scenario execution. Experts validated the simulation to ensure that it accurately reflected real-world operational conditions and could inform strategic decisions during periods of heavy workload. Research has found that simulating real-life helicopter crashes in accident-prevention training makes helicopter pilots better prepared and more able to apply their skills in emergencies. The system addresses a global safety issue documented in safety reports. The training system for ATC operations now utilizes helicopter simulation technology as its primary educational method. The system provides a framework that can be enlarged in order to modify the training of air traffic controllers in their vocation as a result of the aerodrome air traffic control environment becoming increasingly complex.
